Mustaches. Would you have ever thought that the history of the mustache was frought with so many battles that dozens of laws have been created to hold down this phenomenon of upper lip adornment? Even since the earliest known traces of the mustache they have been controversial. Both loved and despised, the mustache will never disappear.
The earliest traces of mustachioed lips were on the Egyptian artifacts found in 2650 BC. And mustaches have constantly been picked on ever since. The Romans thought mustaches were barbaric, as seen on the Gauls faces (god forbid, with no beard attached). English law in 1447 forced men to shave their upper lips. In 1848 mustaches were banned from the Bavarian military.
Today, mustaches are often used as accessories to portray comic, smarmy, or somewhat out-of-touch characters. But even today in our mustache-phobic fashion world, the mustache still holds an important spot on many of the faces of comedians, actors, sports stars, and revered public figures.
